Our Neighbors
THE GUADALUPE DISTRICT
The North Railyard is surrounded by its historical cousin, the Guadalupe District. One of the oldest neighborhoods in Santa Fe, it was originally a farming community, evolving into a bustling marketplace when in 1880, trains began to deliver tourists, new residents and goods to the nearby Railyard. When railroad activity declined, the neighborhood remained, but commercial activity waned until a resurgence in the 1960’s brought about by a new artistic community.
Today, the Guadalupe District retains its original charm, but its style is even more distinctive with a vibrant mix of unusual shops, restaurants and energetic local music scene, bounded by the historical Railyard on one end and the Santuario de Guadalupe – a local and national treasure – at the other. You can easily spend the day exploring the Railyard and Guadalupe District without running out of things to do and see, or continue walking across the Santa Fe River to the Downtown Plaza to experience the best of both the new and the historic Santa Fe.
SANBUSCO MARKET CENTER
In the late 1800’s, Santa Fe Builders Supply Company (nicknamed “Sanbusco”) was one of the first businesses built along the new ATS&F Railroad line. The center thrived for many years and by 1942 grew to a cluster of warehouses and sheds totaling five acres. Eventually, the changes in railroad use left most of the structures abandoned, but after Schepps New Mexico purchased the site in 1984, and removed 100 years worth of plaster, the western warehouse aesthetic was revealed, and a bustling shopping destination was created. The Sanbusco Center has recently been transformed into it’s latest identity as the new home of the New Mexico School for the Arts.
